RESOLUTION

Solidarity to our Italian colleagues

The Executive Board of OLME welcomes the Italian teachers and the educational

movement in Italy as a whole that continues to develop and be dynamically active, in

order to express its complete opposition to the oncoming counter – educational

changes, promoted by Mr Berlusconi’s government, changes with hard neoliberal

characteristics, like:

- the drastic retrenchment in the state budget of the expenses for education: a

reduction which will result to a serious degradation of the public education provided

in Italy,

- the curtailment of more than 100.000 teachers work places within 4 years, a fact

that will result to a substantial increase in the number of students per class and also

to the abandonment of programmes in schools for students with special needs and

training difficulties,

- the transformation of schools and universities into institutions administrated by

private Executive Boards,

- changes of the school duration, which will undermine substantially teacher’s

working conditions, etc.

All the above constitute an unprecedented attack launched by the Italian government

against education as a public good, which aims at the transformation of education

from a public good into a merchandise.

Greek teachers, who are also fighting in our country against a similar attack against

public school and public university, declare our absolute solidarity to our Italian

colleagues, as well as to the entire educational movement in Italy, believing that we

have to coordinate our struggle, in order not to allow the implementation of these

policies in any European country.

Our common struggle will annul this policy
